The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II, has formally installed Chief Saka Awojoodu as the new Jaaran Adimula of Ile-Ife, reinforcing the centuries-old traditions of the ancient Yoruba kingdom.
The installation ceremony, held within the palace premises at Oke-Emese, drew palace chiefs, traditional priests and key stakeholders of the Ife Traditional Council.
A statement issued by the Director of Media and Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace, Moses Olafare, confirmed that the rites were conducted in strict accordance with longstanding customs governing the appointment of high-ranking chiefs in Ile-Ife.
The Ooni was represented at the ceremony by the Obalufe of Ife, Oba Idowu Adediwura, and the Lowa Adimula of Ife, Oba Adekola Adeyeye, who jointly presided over the installation rites.
Following his formal investiture, Awojoodu was led on a symbolic procession to major compounds and sacred sites across Ile-Ife — a significant spiritual exercise marking the assumption of his new responsibilities.
According to palace officials, the ritual movement forms part of the customary process required before fully occupying the revered office.
Addressing the gathering, Oba Adediwura urged the newly installed chief to discharge his duties with integrity, humility and unwavering loyalty to the throne of Oduduwa.
He emphasised the need to preserve the sanctity of the traditional institution and uphold the customs that define the identity of the Ife people.
Similarly, Oba Adeyeye encouraged Awojoodu to view his elevation as a call to greater service, urging him to work collaboratively with fellow kingmakers and palace chiefs to promote unity and stability within the traditional council.
In his acceptance speech, Awojoodu expressed gratitude to the Ooni for finding him worthy of the title. He pledged steadfast loyalty to the throne and committed to preserving the cultural heritage of Ile-Ife.
He also promised to support initiatives aimed at sustaining peace, development and unity in the ancient city.
Before his elevation, Awojoodu held the title of Yegbata of Ife and served as head of the Emeses at the palace — roles regarded as significant preparatory positions within the traditional hierarchy.
The Jaaran Adimula is a senior member of the Ife kingmakers and plays a crucial advisory role in palace affairs, including succession matters. By traditional ranking, the office is next in hierarchy to the Lowa Adimula.
Notably, the current Lowa Adimula previously served as Jaaran Adimula before ascending to his present position.
