Abia North Senator Orji Uzor-Kalu says the continued detention and legal battles of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu can only be resolved through a political settlement, insisting he has been engaging the Federal Government “tirelessly” on the matter.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, monitored by DAILY POST, the former Abia governor reacted to Kanu’s recent conviction by the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism-related offences. He warned that legal fireworks alone would not address the complexities surrounding the case.
Kalu explained that he has been in discussions with federal authorities about the detained separatist leader and intends to reach out to the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, urging him to advise President Bola Tinubu on the next steps.
He lamented the heavy toll IPOB-related unrest had taken on the South-East, noting that countless residents lost jobs, livelihoods, and even their lives during periods of heightened tension in the region.
The senator recalled his previous intervention under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, saying he mounted intense pressure that contributed to Kanu’s release from detention in 2017. He also credited Mamman Daura and former Attorney General Abubakar Malami for their roles at the time.
“People forget that many Igbo were killed during those years,” Kalu said. “We need a political process to bring this matter to an end.”
Kanu’s legal team is expected to challenge the latest ruling at the Court of Appeal.
