Osun 2026: Ex-Lawmaker Mulikat Abiola Enters APC Governorship Race, Pushes for Women’s Leadership

A former member of the Osun State House of Assembly, Mulikat Abiola, has declared her ambition to become the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in next year’s election, positioning herself as the sole female contender in a crowded field.

The APC will hold its primary on 13 December, ahead of the 8 August 2026 governorship poll. At least seven aspirants have already purchased the party’s nomination forms, including former APC National Secretary Senator Iyiola Omisore, ex–Deputy Governor Benedict Alabi, former NIWA Managing Director Bola Oyebamiji, and Lagos-based engineer Dideolu Falobi.

Abiola, who represented Ifelodun State Constituency from 2018 to 2023, said her decision to run was driven by the persistent marginalisation of women in Nigerian politics. Speaking in Osogbo shortly after obtaining the nomination form, she said more women must be encouraged to participate actively in politics and governance.

“This is the time for a female governor to lead our state,” she said. “Osun belongs to all of us; it is not the preserve of a few. Women deserve their rightful place in governance, and I am determined to make that happen.”

She expressed confidence in her ability to win both the party primary and the 2026 election, insisting that the entry of several heavyweight aspirants would not deter her.

Abiola said her campaign would prioritise women’s political representation, inclusive leadership, and empowerment across the state.
