Tension has gripped Tilli community in Bunza Local Government Area of Kebbi State after a violent reprisal attack claimed the lives of more than ten Fulani herders on Sunday.
According to residents, the assault followed the killing of a local vigilante member by suspected Lakurawa bandits, which triggered anger and confusion among villagers who blamed Fulani residents for the incident.
Sources said a group of armed locals stormed the herders’ settlement in the early hours of Sunday, setting off a deadly retaliation that left over ten people dead and several others injured.
“The reprisal attack was carried out in error. They thought the Fulani were behind the vigilante’s death,” a community member told reporters. “More than ten people were killed, and many others were wounded. The search for more bodies is still ongoing.”
The Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, alongside officials of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), reportedly visited the community to commiserate with bereaved families and assess the extent of the tragedy.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Kebbi State Police Command, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, said he had not yet received an official report of the incident but promised to provide details once available.
The attack adds to the rising wave of communal violence and retaliatory killings across parts of northern Nigeria, raising fresh concerns about security lapses and the urgent need for conflict resolution in rural areas.
