Tension is rising in Oyo State’s political landscape after the state chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) warned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against actions that could turn the state into a political battleground ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The warning followed reports that the residence of former Oyo State Deputy Governor, Hazeem Gbolarumi, was attacked on Saturday during activities surrounding the PDP’s congress in the state.
Reacting to the development, the Oyo State chairman of the SDP, Michael Okunlade, urged political leaders to prevent rising tensions from escalating into violence. He stressed that Oyo State has long been regarded as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states and should not be dragged into political unrest as the 2027 elections approach.
According to Okunlade, the party learned about the alleged incident through reports circulating across radio stations and social media platforms on Saturday.
He called on political parties to shift their focus toward policies and programmes that directly impact residents rather than engaging in confrontational politics.
“As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, we call on all political parties in Oyo State to centre their campaigns on meaningful discussions and policies that will benefit the people,” Okunlade said.
The SDP chairman further cautioned the PDP to ensure its internal activities do not create instability in the state, warning that political competition must be conducted responsibly and without threatening public safety.
“We caution the PDP against turning the state into a battleground in the run-up to the 2027 elections. The party should coordinate its activities in the best interest of residents,” he added.
Okunlade also appealed to security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, to remain vigilant and closely monitor political developments to prevent influential actors from inciting unrest.
He emphasised that law enforcement authorities must be proactive in ensuring that political activities remain peaceful as the country gradually moves toward another election cycle.
Reaffirming the party’s stance, Okunlade said the SDP remains committed to maintaining unity and discipline among its members. He warned that acts capable of disrupting peace within the party would not be tolerated under any circumstances as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
