A tragic incident at Soun High School, Oyo State, has claimed the life of Mr Fatai Adegoke, a teacher who was fatally attacked by his students while trying to stop them from gambling during school hours.
Eyewitnesses reported that the confrontation escalated when Adegoke intervened, confronting a group of students engaged in gambling inside the classroom. The students reportedly turned violent, inflicting multiple injuries, including broken limbs.
Mr Adegoke was rushed to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to his injuries, shocking the school community and sparking outrage across the state.
A statement from concerned educators described the late teacher as “a dedicated and disciplined professional whose life was cut short in the line of duty.”
“With deep pain and righteous indignation, we mourn the tragic and avoidable death of Mr Fatai Adegoke, a teacher attacked by his own students while trying to stop them from gambling. This horrifying act is not just an assault on one man, it is an attack on the entire teaching profession,” the statement read.
The educators called on the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), and law enforcement authorities to bring those responsible to justice. They also urged that the parents of the students be held accountable.
Describing the incident as a reflection of moral decline within schools and homes, the group emphasized the urgent need for stricter safety measures, moral education, and discipline enforcement in Nigeria’s public schools.
Efforts to reach the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, for official confirmation were unsuccessful. Reports indicate that the students involved have gone into hiding, heightening community outrage and calls for better protection of teachers.
