The Oyo State Government has launched a major initiative to tackle youth unemployment and modernise agriculture by training 140 young people in tractor operation.
The four-day programme, which began on Monday at the Ido Local Government Secretariat in Ibadan/Ibarapa zone, is part of the state’s ambitious tractorisation agenda designed to expand mechanised farming and ensure food security.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, said the training reflects Governor Seyi Makinde’s vision to empower young people with practical skills while bridging the gap created by an ageing workforce of tractor operators.
“This initiative will directly strengthen our tractorisation programme and significantly increase agricultural productivity across Oyo State,” Olaleye said. “It provides sustainable pathways to employment, economic independence, and food security for our people.”
Participants are being equipped with practical expertise in safe and efficient tractor driving, alongside comprehensive safety kits including helmets, gloves, boots, and overalls. The best trainees will be offered apprenticeships with members of the Tractor Owners Association and established tractor-hiring companies.
The commissioner emphasised that beyond skill acquisition, the programme is laying a foundation for sustainable mechanised farming practices in the state.
The training is holding simultaneously in Oke-Ogun and Oyo-Ogbomoso zones, with hundreds more youths expected to benefit.
Some participants praised the government for creating the opportunity. Hammed Oladapo said the training would help him secure employment as tractor drivers are scarce in the state, while another trainee, Idowu Babatunde, described it as a chance to fulfil his long-held dream of operating farm machinery.
Muyiwa Ibikunle, also a beneficiary, said the programme would enhance his plans to venture into mechanised farming.
With agriculture employing a large share of Oyo’s population, the government hopes the initiative will drive productivity, reduce unemployment, and inspire a new generation of skilled agricultural workers.
