Panic in Ikorodu as Lagos Public School Building Collapses After Hours

Ikorodu, Lagos — Residents of the Odo-Kekere community in Ikorodu were thrown into shock on Thursday evening after a section of a public school building partially collapsed, sending a thunderous noise across the neighborhood.

The incident occurred after school hours, with preliminary reports confirming that students were not in classrooms at the time. First responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) quickly arrived at the scene, cordoning off the area for safety.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the collapse and the extent of the damage, while emergency teams continue to search the site to ensure no staff or security personnel were trapped in the rubble.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic. Mrs. Boluwaji Aderinto, whose property borders the school, voiced the concerns of residents and parents about the state of educational infrastructure in the area. “We heard a loud crack and then dust everywhere. We thank God it didn’t happen in the morning when the children were in their desks. This is a wake-up call for the government,” she said.

A high-level delegation from the Lagos State Ministry of Education visited the site to assess the situation and determine the next steps for repair and safety improvements.

The collapse has reignited discussions on the urgent need to renovate aging school facilities across Lagos State to prevent potential tragedies.
