The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Convention Planning Committee and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has declared that the party’s national elective convention will proceed in Ibadan as scheduled, dismissing speculation of a possible change in venue.
Fintiri spoke late Thursday after a crucial meeting of top party leaders at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja. The gathering drew key figures including Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde; PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum; former Senate President, Bukola Saraki; National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba; and former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki.
After hours of deliberations, Fintiri said the party had taken “elaborate decisions” and was fully united behind the planned convention.
“We’ve just come out of our critical stakeholders’ meeting where a lot of elaborate decisions were taken. I want to tell you here that we are going to Ibadan for our convention, and the convention is sacrosanct,” he told reporters.
The governor declined further questions as his security team ushered him away, but party insiders say the meeting was aimed at closing ranks ahead of what is expected to be a defining moment for the opposition party.
The Ibadan convention is seen as a major test of the PDP’s internal cohesion and its readiness to reposition itself ahead of future national elections.
