Factional Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abdulrahman Mohammed, says his leadership is on a mission to restore the integrity of the party and correct the internal decay that set in before the 2015 general elections.
Speaking during the inauguration of a new Board of Trustees (BoT) in Abuja on Friday, Mohammed said the rot began when the party abandoned its long-standing zoning principle and allowed personal ambitions to override the collective interest of members.
“We must be honest with ourselves – the decay we are correcting today did not start yesterday. It began when we abandoned the principle of zoning before the 2015 elections,” he said. “It began when we allowed ambition to override equity and ignored the cries of reason from within our ranks.”
The factional chairman lamented that those decisions fractured the party’s unity and weakened its moral authority, consequences he said are still visible today.
However, he expressed optimism that the PDP has been given a “second chance” to rebuild and reclaim its position as a leading voice in Nigeria’s democracy.
“God has given us another opportunity — one of restoration, reconciliation, and renewal,” Mohammed stated. “Under this leadership, the PDP will never again be held hostage by impunity, manipulation, or disregard for its own constitution.”
Mohammed promised that his leadership would promote transparency, respect for court judgments, and fairness in all party congresses. He emphasized that internal party matters must still align with constitutional order and rule of law, warning that “party autonomy cannot mean lawlessness.”
Calling for unity and discipline, Mohammed urged members to choose reform over rebellion and principle over politics.
“Let history record that when the PDP stood at the edge of the precipice, men and women of goodwill rose to pull it back,” he said. “Together, we can heal our party, rebuild trust, and restore the PDP as the true hope of Nigeria’s democratic future.”
The speech marks the latest in a series of moves by the factional leadership to reposition the PDP amid internal crises and leadership disputes.
