Re-elected chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Venatius Ikem, says the opposition must now turn its focus to reclaiming power in 2027 after successfully concluding its state congress.
Ikem, who secured 1,509 votes to retain his position alongside 38 other elected officers, described his renewed mandate as a fresh charge to rebuild and reposition the PDP for future victories.
“We did a lot to sustain the party to where it is today,” Ikem said after the announcement by the electoral panel chairman, Rt. Hon. Jones Onyeriri. “With this new mandate, we hope to correct our mistakes, put our house together, and prepare for the task ahead.”
The former PDP gubernatorial candidate in the state, Professor Sandy Onor, echoed the call for unity and resilience, stressing that the party still enjoys enormous grassroots support.
“All the ingredients of success are noticeable,” Onor said. “The PDP still has huge momentum in our state and the future is beautiful and bright.”
Both leaders emphasised that party cohesion will be non-negotiable as they prepare to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election. Ikem added that with diligence, it should not surprise anyone if PDP returns as the ruling party in Cross River by 2027.
