Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged Nigerian opposition forces to unite following the high-profile defection of former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Obi described Kwankwaso as an “elder brother” and emphasized that the move signals a pivotal moment in efforts to rebuild Nigeria’s democracy. The former presidential candidate revealed that he visited Kano on Monday at Kwankwaso’s invitation, coinciding with the latter’s decision to formally join the ADC.

“This is the time for all opposition forces and well-meaning Nigerians to set aside their differences and work together in unity of purpose,” Obi said.
“We must move beyond the politics of division, ethnicity, religion, and region, and embrace the politics of competence, character, capacity, compassion, and commitment to a better Nigeria.”

Obi further stressed that the collective goal should extend beyond winning elections. It is about rebuilding institutions, restoring public confidence in governance, and securing a prosperous future for the next generation.

Political analysts view Kwankwaso’s defection as a significant boost for the ADC, potentially reshaping the opposition landscape ahead of Nigeria’s next general elections. Obi’s call for unity underscores a growing momentum for opposition collaboration in addressing the country’s socio-economic and political challenges.
