Peter Obi Condemns Kwara Massacre, Calls for National Security Emergency

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has denounced the killing of at least 12 people in Oke-Ode, Kwara State, describing the attack as a “mindless act of violence” that has left the nation in mourning.

Gunmen stormed the community in Ifelodun Local Government Area on Sunday, killing vigilante members and the Baale of Ogbayo, among others. The assault has sparked renewed fears over Nigeria’s deepening insecurity crisis.

Reacting on Tuesday via his verified X account, the former Anambra State governor called for urgent action, insisting that no citizen should be forced to live in fear within their own home.

“We cannot continue to normalise tragedy. My heart goes out to the governor and the people of Kwara State. I reassure you that you are not alone,” Obi wrote.

He offered condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls, while pressing for a declaration of a national security emergency.

The killings have further underscored widespread calls for government to intensify efforts in tackling banditry and restoring peace to vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
