Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly condemned the disruption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat opening in Bakassi Local Government Area, Cross River State, describing it as “an attack on democracy itself.”

Reports indicate that suspected political thugs stormed the venue on Saturday, scattering party supporters and destroying canopies, loudspeakers, chairs, and other equipment prepared for the event.

Speaking via X, Obi expressed deep concern over the rising tolerance for political violence and misconduct in Nigeria.

“What happened at the ADC office in Bakassi is not merely an attack on a political party; it is an attack on democracy itself,” he said.

Warning Against Erosion of Democratic Standards

Obi cautioned that the decline in leadership standards and the acceptance of political intimidation could destabilize the nation. He noted that the circulation of fraudulent practices in politics, such as presenting forged certificates for elections, sends a dangerous message to society.

“The ability for individuals to present forged certificates for election sends a troubling message to our society. If we continue down this path, violence may become the future of our democracy,” Obi stated.

He emphasized that genuine leadership cannot arise from fraud and intimidation, adding that such acts jeopardize the welfare of citizens and the prospects of future generations.

The former governor of called on authorities to uphold law and order, stressing the need to protect political institutions and ensure peaceful participation in democratic processes.
