Former Labour Party (LP) governorship aspirant in Edo State, Olumide Apata, has formally defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing former presidential candidate Peter Obi as a key influence behind his move.

At a reception held at the ADC secretariat in Benin City, Apata was warmly welcomed by Edo State ADC Chairman, Kennedy Odion, alongside prominent political figures including ex-governors John Odigie-Oyegun and Oserheimen Osunbor, former Senate Chief Whip Roland Owie, and other senior party members.

“I joined the party to add value and be part of the change that Obi represents,” Apata told supporters, crediting Obi’s decision to join the ADC on December 31, 2025, as a motivating factor for his defection. He also thanked the Obidient Movement for their encouragement and support.

Peter Obi, speaking at the event, reiterated his commitment to transforming Nigeria’s political and economic landscape. “We must build a nation that moves from consumption to production,” he said, emphasizing ADC’s mission to promote inclusive prosperity and equitable growth.

Party elders and former governors expressed optimism about ADC’s expanding coalition in Edo State, highlighting the potential for a strong showing in the 2027 general elections. Osunbor warned against manipulation of the electoral process by the ruling party and urged citizens to remain vigilant to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Apata’s defection is seen as a strategic boost for the ADC in Edo State, signaling growing influence for the party ahead of the next national elections.
