Fresh violence has rocked Plateau State, where at least three people were killed and several others injured after gunmen attacked Garga community in Kanam Local Government Area.
Residents said the assault, which occurred late Monday, left houses burnt, food supplies looted and livestock stolen, forcing villagers to flee into nearby forests and rocky terrain for safety.
Locals described how more than 100 armed men, riding motorcycles, entered the community shooting indiscriminately. The attackers reportedly overwhelmed residents before setting homes ablaze.
A community member, Salihu Garga, said the incident reflects a troubling pattern of repeated raids in the area.
“The Fulani bandits have found it very easy to attack communities in Kanam, especially Garga. It has become a regular pattern because we do not have security operatives to protect us,” he said.
“Yesterday evening, they came again, began shooting at the people, killing three and injuring several others. They also burnt down houses and stole food items and livestock.”
He added that local vigilantes and hunters from Garga and neighbouring communities eventually mobilised, forcing the attackers to retreat.
Some residents are still unaccounted for, raising fears that the death toll could rise.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Nigeria Police Force in the state were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report. Calls and messages to the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer were not returned.
The latest attack underscores growing concerns about insecurity in parts of Plateau, where rural communities have repeatedly reported deadly raids by armed groups.
Authorities are yet to release a formal statement on the incident.
