A suspected armed phone thief was set on fire by a mob on Tuesday afternoon in Apata community, Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State.
According to sources, the young man allegedly snatched a phone at gunpoint earlier in the day. Eyewitnesses said he fired a shot into the air to scare off anyone attempting to apprehend him.
Residents quickly mobilized, chasing and eventually catching the suspect as he struggled with his firearm. Before law enforcement arrived, the mob set him ablaze, highlighting growing frustration over rising armed robberies in the area.
Attempts to reach the Plateau State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Alabo Alfred, for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
The incident reflects mounting concerns over crime in Plateau State and raises questions about the role of vigilante justice in local communities where security presence is limited.
