Gunmen have abducted the District Head of Birbysng, Alhaji Zubairu Usman Garb, along with two women, during a late-night raid on Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attackers stormed the community around 1 a.m. on Sunday, firing sporadically before seizing their victims. The wife of the district head, who was also taken, managed to escape from captivity.
The Secretary of the Kanam Development Association (KADA), Shehu Kanam, confirmed the incident in a statement co-signed with the association’s chairman, Garba Aliyu. The group condemned the attack and urged security agencies to act swiftly to rescue the captives and restore calm.
This latest abduction comes just a week after gunmen kidnapped and killed the Ward Head of Shuwaka community in Kyaram District, sparking renewed fears across the region.
KADA called on Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and elected representatives from the area to intensify efforts to end what it described as “rising cases of kidnapping and banditry.” The group noted that residents in Kanam have suffered repeated abductions for ransom, while others have been killed in similar attacks.
Police spokesman DSP Alabo Alfred did not immediately respond to calls for comment.
