The Lagos State Police Command says it has uncovered a grand scheme allegedly masterminded by a 65-year-old man who paraded himself as the “Obi of Lagos” in a bid to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians of ₦1.5 billion.
Engr. Chibuike Azubike — who police say is neither a certified engineer nor a recognised traditional ruler — was arrested alongside three accomplices after an aborted installation ceremony in Amuwo Odofin.
Police spokesperson DSP Babaseyi B. Oluseyi said Azubike admitted during interrogation that he had falsely claimed to be an engineer, when in reality he was only a supplier of construction materials.
“Investigations revealed that the suspect had announced plans to unveil a prototype of a ₦1.5 billion ‘Palace of Obi of Lagos State’ at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin, on Saturday, September 13, 2025. The event was a ploy to defraud dignitaries and unsuspecting members of the public,” Oluseyi explained.
Authorities confirmed that Azubike acted without the backing of any recognised traditional institution in Lagos, warning residents to disregard his claims and misleading social media posts.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, assured that the suspects would be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
Jimoh also urged residents to remain vigilant, stressing that the command will continue to protect citizens from “criminal deception” while sustaining public peace and order.
