Protesters Clash with Police at National Assembly Over E-Transmission of Election Results

Tensions erupted at the National Assembly as protesters demanding real-time transmission of election results clashed with police forces after tear gas was deployed to disperse the crowd.

Chaos as Tear Gas Fired on Demonstrators

Videos from the scene show demonstrators fleeing the tear gas, with some shouting, “They don shoot tear gas!” and “They shot it directly at the people!” Others were heard chanting “We no go gree o,” signaling defiance amid the chaos.

The disruption also affected journalists covering the event, with some caught in the confusion and struggling to report safely.

Protests Intensify Calls for Electoral Transparency

Tuesday marked the second consecutive day protesters gathered at the National Assembly Complex, pressing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to implement the real-time electronic transmission of votes from polling units to its IREV portal.

Activists have argued that such measures are critical for ensuring credible and transparent elections, particularly with Nigeria approaching the 2027 general polls.

Authorities have yet to release official statements on arrests or injuries resulting from the confrontation, but security presence remains heightened around the Assembly.
