Qatar Airways Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Lagos After Mid-Air Technical Fault

A Qatar Airways aircraft carrying 248 passengers and 12 crew members made an emergency landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos on Thursday after experiencing a technical fault while in Nigerian airspace.

The pilot successfully brought the plane down safely, with emergency teams from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other responders on high alert along the runway.

No Casualties, No Major Damage

LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed in a statement that no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded during the incident. He added that the aircraft also did not suffer significant damage.

The agency said the emergency response was activated immediately after distress alerts were received through its emergency lines. A coordinated multi-agency response team was deployed from LASEMA’s command centre in Alausa, Ikeja, to monitor and manage the situation.

What Happened

Preliminary investigations by response teams revealed that the aircraft, identified as a Boeing 767/112, developed technical issues while airborne, prompting the pilot to perform a forced landing at MMIA.

The plane was later moved to the apron for further inspection and repairs after checks by the pilot and engineering crew.

A Smooth Response Under Pressure

LASEMA said the swift action of the emergency response teams ensured that the aircraft landed safely without any disruption to passengers’ safety. The agency also noted that the collaborative effort of all responders helped prevent any escalation of the incident.

The airline and relevant aviation authorities are expected to conduct a detailed assessment of the technical fault.
