Kano, Nigeria — The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested 19 suspects and shut down multiple drug joints in Gezawa, Kano State, as part of a targeted operation to curb illicit drug activities during the Ramadan period.
The raid, carried out by the agency’s Kano Strategic Command, forms part of an enforcement campaign tagged “Operation Ramadan Mubarak.” Officials say the initiative is designed to protect public health and uphold the sanctity of the holy month.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the command’s spokesperson, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, the operation followed credible intelligence provided by a concerned community member.
The Kano State Commander of the agency, Dahiru Yahaya-Lawal, said officers moved swiftly on the tip-off, leading to the dismantling of several drug hubs in the area.
Various illicit substances were recovered during the operation, including cannabis sativa, diazepam, pregabalin tablets, and Exol-5 — a street drug commonly known as “Suck and Die” — alongside other controlled substances.
The seized drugs are currently in NDLEA custody, while investigations continue.
Yahaya-Lawal said the command’s objective is to ensure residents can observe Ramadan in a peaceful and safe environment.
“Our objective is to ensure safe streets and enable residents to observe a peaceful and fulfilling Ramadan,” he said. “If some individuals disregard their faith, health and the safety of others, the agency will act decisively to protect the wider community.”
He commended members of the public for their cooperation and urged continued vigilance, stressing that community intelligence remains crucial in combating drug abuse and trafficking.
The Kano operation aligns with a nationwide directive from the NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Buba-Marwa, to intensify the fight against drug networks across Nigeria.
Yahaya-Lawal reaffirmed the command’s commitment to proactive enforcement and partnership with local communities to dismantle drug rings and prosecute offenders.
Residents were encouraged to report suspicious activities and illegal drug dealings to authorities, with officials emphasising that timely information is key to safeguarding public health and security.
