Rema Reveals Pre-Show Rituals: Drinks, Smokes, and Prays Before Performing

Milan, Italy — Nigerian Afrobeats star Rema has shared insights into his unusual pre-show rituals, admitting that he drinks alcohol, smokes cigarettes, and prays before taking the stage.

Speaking to Dazed during Milan Fashion Week, where he walked the runway for Diesel, Rema explained that his routine also includes a thorough sound-check with his team to ensure everything is set for a flawless performance.

The Rituals Behind the Spotlight

“A little Tequila, a little cigarette, pray, tap in with the team and make sure everything is on cue,” Rema revealed when asked about his pre-performance preparation.

He also described performing as more demanding than walking the runway, noting the physical and mental focus required to keep the crowd energized. “Performing has a lot to do with your breathwork and you have to keep the crowd going,” he said.

Rema also discussed his current musical inspirations, highlighting that he has been drawn to Sudanese cultural live music lately.

Despite his disciplined approach to performing, Rema candidly admitted that smoking cigarettes is his “biggest vice.”
