Sabinus Says Father ‘Regretted Paying My School Fees’ After Discovering His Comedy Career

Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, widely known as Sabinus, has opened up about the tense early days of his career, revealing that his father once felt he had wasted his money sponsoring his education.

Speaking during a sit-down with VJ Adams, the award-winning skit maker recounted how his father had hoped he would pursue a career in law. After attempts to gain admission into a law programme failed, he opted to study Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt — a decision that inadvertently led him to comedy.

Sabinus said he discovered skit making on campus and began creating content long before fame or money followed.

He told VJ Adams: “At first, my dad never wanted me to be what I am today, he wanted me to be a lawyer. I tried my best but I couldn’t secure a law admission… It was on campus that I saw skit making and I decided to try it out. Money wasn’t coming.”

The comedian explained that he kept his budding career secret until after graduation. His father only learned the truth when he began appearing on promotional posters for comedy shows.

“He was very furious,” Sabinus recalled. “He fumed, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer.’ He regretted funding my education.”

According to Sabinus, the relationship later improved as his success grew — especially when he began supporting his father financially from proceeds of his comedy work.

The comedian, now one of Nigeria’s most recognisable skit makers, said his father eventually gave him full blessings after witnessing the impact of his career.
