Kebbi, Nigeria — Suspected members of the Lakurawa armed group reportedly stormed Dadin-Kowa community in Maiyama Local Government Area, Kebbi State, killing several residents and injuring many others during Taraweeh prayers.
The attack occurred late Wednesday night as worshippers gathered in the mosque for Ramadan prayers, according to security analyst and crisis journalist Bakatsine, who reported the incident via his X handle on Thursday.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the gunmen opened fire on congregants, resulting in multiple fatalities and numerous injuries. The mosque itself was reportedly desecrated, heightening concerns over the growing threat posed by armed groups in northern Nigeria.
Bakatsine described the attack as a stark reminder of persistent insecurity in the region, emphasizing the timing of the assault during the holy month of Ramadan. He condemned the perpetrators for targeting innocent worshippers, stating that such acts undermine the principles of Islam and inflame public hostility toward the faith.
As of Thursday, security agencies had not issued an official statement on the incident. Local authorities are reportedly assessing the situation and coordinating a response to prevent further violence.
The attack in Maiyama reflects a broader pattern of violence in Kebbi State and neighbouring northern communities, where armed groups have frequently targeted civilians, including during religious gatherings, highlighting ongoing challenges for national security.
