Shehu Sani Links Rising Northern Terror Attacks to 2027 Elections

Former senator and human rights activist, Shehu Sani, has attributed the recent spike in terrorist attacks across Northern Nigeria to the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Reports indicate that insurgents and bandits have intensified attacks, particularly in Borno State, resulting in deaths and widespread fear among civilians.

Reacting to the violence, Sani took to X, urging religious leaders to speak out against the atrocities. He condemned attacks targeting innocent Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan, questioning the so-called religious justification often cited by assailants.

Sani wrote: “Each time the election season is upon us, bandits and terrorists in the North heighten their attacks. Whatever their motive or intention for this calculated upsurge, it’s condemnable. They kidnap and murder their fellow Muslims in the holy month of Ramadan and claim to be fighting a religious cause. Our Clerics must muster the courage to rebuke these evil forces.”

The former lawmaker’s comments highlight growing concerns that electoral periods in Nigeria often coincide with increased security challenges, exacerbating an already fragile situation in the Northern regions.

Security analysts warn that unless proactive measures are taken, the electoral season could further escalate violence, threatening both civilians and the democratic process.
