Islamic scholar Sheik Ahmad Gumi has stated that insecurity in Nigeria affects both Christians and Muslims, calling for balanced foreign engagement that respects the nation’s sovereignty.
Speaking on Trust TV on Wednesday, Gumi emphasized that external assistance should complement, not compromise, Nigeria’s independence.
“No doubt Christians are victims of insecurity, so are Muslims too. The US has to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty. Nigeria requires foreign assistance while maintaining its sovereignty,” he said.
Drawing historical parallels, Gumi noted, “During the Nigerian Civil War, Russia provided aid when America supported secessionists. It appears ironic that Nigeria’s foreign policy is now influenced externally. We should also look at our own national interest.”
The cleric’s remarks highlight growing concerns over rising insecurity across Nigeria, affecting religious communities and calling attention to the delicate balance between seeking foreign help and preserving national autonomy.
