Nigeria – Nigerian singer Simi has come under heavy criticism on social media after TikTok user Mirabel admitted that her previously viral rape allegation was false, reigniting debates around sexual violence, false accusations, and mental health.
The controversy began on February 18 when Mirabel posted a TikTok claiming she had been raped and injured with a blade inside her home. The video quickly went viral, triggering widespread outrage, emotional reactions, and discussions across platforms.
While many initially believed her story, others questioned inconsistencies in the video and accused Mirabel of seeking online attention, creating a divide in public opinion.
During the controversy, Simi took to X to speak against rape culture, urging men to hold each other accountable. Her remarks, however, sparked backlash, with critics accusing her of overlooking the issue of false rape claims.
The situation escalated after an old tweet by Simi from 2016 resurfaced and was misinterpreted as sexual innuendo, and a fake apology screenshot circulated online as a meme mocking the singer.
Simi defended her position, highlighting that sexual violence remains widespread. “Almost every woman I know personally has been sexually assaulted at some point in their lives,” she wrote. “You can’t think it’s okay to shut people up from speaking up about assault because some people lie.” She added that lies should have consequences but stressed that her message was focused on ending sexual violence.
The case took a new turn after social media activist VeryDarkMan revealed he had spoken to Mirabel, who admitted the rape claim was false. Mirabel confessed to creating the fake TikTok account and described herself as an 18-year-old orphan struggling with alcohol and codeine addiction, self-harm, and identity issues.
VeryDarkMan appealed to the public for understanding and stressed the importance of mental health support, noting arrangements were being made for Mirabel to enter a rehabilitation centre.
Authorities have transferred the investigation to Ogun State, while the incident continues to spark online discussions about accountability, sexual violence, and the pressures of social media fame.
