Tems Reveals She Was Booed and Bombarded with Bottles Early in Her Music Career

Grammy-Winning Star Opens Up About Initial Rejections and Staying True to Her Style

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems has recounted the tough early days of her music career, revealing that she once faced public humiliation while performing at a school event.

In an interview with Big Boy TV, the “Crazy Tings” singer shared that instead of receiving applause, she was booed off stage and pelted with plastic bottles.

“I remember one time I was going to perform at my school as an up-and-coming singer and I thought I was going to receive a standing ovation. But I got booed. They even threw plastic bottles at me,” Tems said.

The R&B star explained that despite such discouraging experiences, she remained committed to her music, insisting on maintaining her unique sound rather than performing popular covers like many of her peers.

Reflecting on her journey, Tems expressed pride in her decision to stick to her originality, which eventually helped cement her global recognition.

“These initial rejections could have been because I stayed true to myself. Looking back now, I’m glad I didn’t compromise my style despite the pressures,” she added.

Her story highlights the resilience and determination behind her rise from local performances to international acclaim.
