Tinubu Accepts Egbetokun’s Resignation as Inspector-General of Police, Appoints Tunji Disu as Acting IGP

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the resignation of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down citing urgent family reasons.

The announcement was made on Tuesday in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Presidency Confirms Resignation

According to the statement, President Tinubu accepted Egbetokun’s resignation earlier in the day and expressed “profound appreciation” for his decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and the country.

The President commended the outgoing police chief for his professionalism, commitment and efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security architecture during his time in office.

Egbetokun was appointed in June 2023 for a four-year tenure expected to run until June 2027, following amendments to the Police Act.

Tunji Disu Named Acting Inspector-General

Following the resignation, Tinubu approved the immediate appointment of Tunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, as Acting Inspector-General of Police.

The Presidency said the decision was taken in view of prevailing security challenges and in line with existing laws and legal guidance.

The statement added that the President is confident Disu’s operational experience and leadership record will provide stability and direction for the Nigeria Police Force during a critical period.

Police Council Meeting, Senate Confirmation Next

In compliance with the Police Act 2020, Tinubu is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police.

Afterwards, his nomination will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.

The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security, enhancing institutional effectiveness and ensuring the Nigeria Police Force remains disciplined, transparent and prepared to fulfil its constitutional responsibilities.
