Tinubu Mourns Soldiers Killed in Borno Terror Attack, Urges Troops to Stay Resolute

Grief has swept through Nigeria’s security community following a deadly terrorist attack on a military base in Borno State that claimed the lives of several soldiers. President Bola Tinubu has reacted with strong emotions, praising the bravery of the fallen troops while urging the armed forces to remain steadfast.

The attack targeted the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation HADIN KAI in Benisheikh during the early hours of Thursday. Defence Headquarters confirmed that insurgents launched a coordinated assault on the camp but were eventually repelled after intense fighting.

Despite successfully pushing back the attackers, the military acknowledged that the clash resulted in casualties among its ranks. While the exact number of those killed has not been disclosed, officials described the loss as significant.

According to the military, troops on ground mounted a fierce resistance, responding with what it called “exceptional courage, professionalism, and superior firepower,” forcing the insurgents to retreat from the base.

Reacting to the incident, President Tinubu, in a statement issued by his spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, paid tribute to the fallen soldiers and extended condolences to their families and the Nigerian Armed Forces. He described their sacrifice as a testament to their commitment to defending the nation.

“From the reports I have received, our armed forces have been conducting sustained and intense offensives against insurgents. This attack is a sign of desperation,” the President said. He emphasized that the efforts of the military continue to weaken terrorist groups despite such counterattacks.

Tinubu also urged frontline troops not to lose morale, assuring them of the government’s continued support in terms of equipment and welfare. He called on Nigerians and the media to stand behind the armed forces and avoid narratives that undermine their sacrifices.

Extending his sympathy to the government and people of Borno State, the President reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to working with local authorities to achieve lasting peace and defeat insurgency in the region.
