Tragedy in Cross River: Mini Bus Plunges into Ogoja River, Five Dead

Five people have died after a mini bus plunged into the Ogoja River in Cross River State while traveling from Igoli to Abakpa. The driver reportedly escaped the accident unscathed.

Eyewitnesses and local residents described the scene as chaotic. Idah Roland, a resident, told reporters:
“It’s unfortunate. Abakpa River bridge doesn’t have a protector or iron railings. Practically there is nothing to prevent such accidents from taking place. Something needs to be done urgently.”

The narrow bridge and roads, currently under renovation by the Cross River State government, are frequently congested with high traffic, including motorcycles. Residents warn that the ongoing works and limited infrastructure contribute to recurring accidents, with vehicles occasionally plunging into the river at bumpy spots.

Efforts to reach officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps for comment were unsuccessful as personnel were reportedly on road patrol at the time of the incident.

This latest tragedy has reignited calls for urgent safety measures, including the installation of protective railings and improved road conditions, to prevent future accidents along the Ogoja River crossing.
