Tragedy in Kano: Eight-Year-Old Girl Killed at Construction Site

An eight-year-old girl, Siyama Idris, has died after falling onto an exposed iron rod at a road and drainage construction site in Tudun Wada, Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

Eyewitness Abdulrashid Yusuf told reporters the incident occurred on Saturday near Tudun Wada Primary School, where ongoing road and drainage projects have created hazards for pedestrians. Siyama had been sent to a nearby shop to buy items for iftar when she attempted to cross the partially constructed drainage.

“People normally use a wooden plank to cross the drainage. The iron rod was uncovered, and when she lost her balance, it penetrated her stomach,” Yusuf said. The child died instantly at the scene before she could be taken to hospital.

Residents have expressed outrage over poor safety measures, pointing to uncovered iron rods and open drainage edges as serious threats, particularly to children. The tragedy comes days after a 15-year-old boy, Ibrahim Umar, fell into a drainage along Badawa Road, sustaining injuries that required medical attention.

Local residents are now calling on government authorities and contractors to enforce stricter safety protocols, cover exposed rods, and provide safe pedestrian crossings to prevent future accidents.
