
Police launch investigation as community mourns young victim of fatal road accident
A nine-year-old girl has died after being struck by a tipper truck in Akungba-Akoko, in what authorities have described as a tragic road accident.
The incident occurred on Sunday at Supare Junction along Supare Road in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Police confirmed that the child was hit by an unregistered Mercedes-Benz tipper truck and was rushed to a hospital shortly after the collision. She was later pronounced dead by a medical doctor.
Spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Abayomi Jimoh, said the driver of the truck has been taken into custody.
“The Police Command regrets to confirm a fatal motor accident… resulting in the death of a 9-year-old girl,” he said, adding that the vehicle involved has been recovered for further inspection.
Investigation underway
Authorities say a full investigation has been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine accountability.
Police also extended condolences to the bereaved family, assuring that justice would be pursued.
The tragic incident has renewed concerns about road safety and compliance with traffic regulations, particularly involving heavy-duty vehicles operating within residential areas.
