President Bola Tinubu has sacked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, appointing Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Tunji Disu as his replacement.
The decision followed a directive from the President instructing Egbetokun to resign during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.
Egbetokun, Nigeria’s 22nd IGP, was initially appointed on June 19, 2023, with confirmation by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023. He was due to retire on September 4, 2024, upon reaching the statutory retirement age of 60, but President Tinubu controversially extended his tenure.
Tunji Disu, a career police officer with extensive experience in law enforcement and security operations, now assumes leadership of the Nigeria Police Force at a time of heightened national security challenges.
The presidential directive and change in police leadership signal a significant shift in Nigeria’s policing landscape, coming amidst ongoing public scrutiny of law enforcement performance and national security priorities.
The Nigeria Police Force is expected to issue official statements regarding the transition and outline the strategic agenda under the new IGP.
