US Delivers Military Supplies to Nigeria as Security Ties Deepen Amid Rising Insecurity

The United States has supplied fresh military equipment to Nigerian security agencies, reinforcing bilateral defence cooperation as Nigeria battles a worsening wave of insecurity.

The delivery was confirmed on Tuesday by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), which said the supplies were handed over to Nigerian partners in Abuja.

“US forces delivered critical military supplies to our Nigerian partners in Abuja,” AFRICOM said in a post on X. “This delivery supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasizes our shared security partnership.”

Strengthening security cooperation

The latest support comes as Nigeria grapples with persistent security threats, including mass kidnappings, banditry and terrorist attacks across several regions of the country.

Hundreds of people have been abducted in recent months, particularly in the north-west and north-central states, heightening pressure on security agencies to restore order.

US–Nigeria security cooperation has intensified against this backdrop. On Christmas Day, US forces carried out airstrikes on terrorist enclaves in north-west Nigeria, targeting armed groups blamed for violent attacks and kidnappings.

Ongoing partnership

While AFRICOM did not disclose the exact nature or quantity of the military supplies delivered, the command described them as “critical” to Nigeria’s ongoing security operations.

The United States has repeatedly described Nigeria as a key security partner in West Africa, with cooperation spanning intelligence sharing, training and logistical support.
