Veteran Nigerian filmmaker and producer Wale Adenuga has denied allegations by actor Abiodun Ayoyinka regarding financial neglect and restrictions linked to the iconic comedy series Papa Ajasco and Company.
Adenuga, chairman of Wale Adenuga Productions (WAP), described the claims as “entirely false and misleading,” asserting that the Papa Ajasco brand remains legally protected and that any use of the character for personal ventures requires official approval to safeguard the show’s reputation.
“He has not been barred from accepting advert jobs… all that is required is to seek official approval from WAP. This is part of brand protection,” Adenuga said.
The filmmaker also addressed Ayoyinka’s recent social media activity, expressing surprise but acknowledging the actor’s success in monetising the character online:
“My first impression when I watched the Papa Ajasco video now trending… was ‘Okay, so this guy has taken Papa Ajasco comedy into the public space? It is all well and good. I am happy for him, as his money-making strategy using social media has apparently worked for him.’”
Adenuga highlighted the actor’s long career as a retired civil servant, noting that he served over 30 years with the Lagos State Government and benefited from various incentives provided by the production company, including multiple cars.
“Why is Abiodun Ayoyinka claiming to be broke? Where are the investments from his over 30 years of meritorious service… What happened to his gratuities?” Adenuga asked.
He emphasised that other cast members, such as Pa James, continue to pursue independent projects, explaining that actors spend just six weeks per year on set, leaving ample time for outside work. Adenuga reiterated that Wale Adenuga Productions adheres to industry-standard payments and financial obligations.
The statement closes the production company’s defence, firmly rejecting any narrative of exploitation or financial abandonment.
