The United States Embassy has highlighted education as a major pillar strengthening ties between Washington and Abuja, as more Nigerian students flock to American universities.
Speaking at the 2025 EduUSA Fair in Abuja on Monday, Public Diplomacy Officer Brian Neubert said the growing interest reflects both the quality of American higher education and the mutual benefits for both nations.
More than 28 US colleges participated in the fair, showcasing study opportunities to thousands of young Nigerians. According to Neubert, Nigerians studying in the US contribute directly to America’s economy while returning home with skills that help drive Nigeria’s development.
“This is an export of the United States, where Nigerians come to US campuses to pay tuition,” Neubert said. “The United States is proud to partner with Nigeria in empowering the next generation of leaders, innovators, and change-makers.”
The event, themed “Empowering Future, Discover American Excellency in Education and Innovation”, drew a large turnout of students exploring pathways to study abroad.
Data from the US Embassy and the 2024 Open Doors Report showed Nigeria ranked seventh globally, with 20,029 students enrolled in American universities during the 2023/2024 academic year.
Analysts say the surge underscores Nigeria’s position as one of the fastest-growing sources of international students for the US.
