The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has called on Nigerian youths not to mortgage their future by selling their votes during elections.
He made the call at the National Youth Rally marking the 40th Anniversary of the Catholic Youth Organisation of Nigeria (CYON) hosted by the Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka, Anambra State.
Addressing thousands of young people, Obi said the task of nation-building rests heavily on the shoulders of youths, stressing that Nigeria can only progress when leaders are chosen based on competence, capacity, compassion, and character.
“Our country is richly blessed, yet we remain trapped in hunger, insecurity, and poor governance.
“Becoming president is not the disaster, the true disaster is when leaders lack the courage and integrity to make Nigeria work.
“We cannot continue on a path where leaders trade in lies while citizens go hungry.”
Obi urged young Nigerians, especially those turning 18, to take voter registration seriously and to use their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) as a weapon against bad governance.
“Do not sell your vote, for once you do, you have also sold your healthcare, your education, and your future.
“God has blessed Nigeria, but He will not descend to elect leaders for us. That responsibility is ours,” he warned.
The former Anambra governor commended Rev. Fr. Paschal Udo, other priests present, the leadership of CYON, and Nigerian youths for their resilience and growing commitment to political participation.
According to him, Nigerian youths are no longer content with mere complaints but are ready to take decisive action.
“With honesty and determination, together we will build the New Nigeria,” Obi noted.
