Farmers in several communities across Zamfara State say they are living in fear after armed bandits allegedly demanded ₦20 million before allowing them to access their farmlands this harvest season.
The affected communities — Shanawa, Jangeru, and Galadi in Shinkafi Local Government Area — have accused the gunmen of turning farming into what they describe as a “ransom business.”
Residents told reporters that the criminal gangs imposed the demand as a form of “levy,” warning that any farmer who refuses to pay will be denied entry to their farmland or face violent attacks.
A resident, who asked not to be named for security reasons, said the extortion has become an annual ritual.
“Every year, these people demand money before we can farm. If we don’t pay, they destroy our crops or kidnap farmers. This year, they said it’s ₦20 million,” he said.
The development has triggered widespread concern among locals and state officials, as Zamfara — one of Nigeria’s largest food-producing states — continues to battle escalating insecurity that threatens agricultural output and food supply.
Local leaders have reportedly appealed to both state and federal authorities to intervene urgently to prevent famine and further displacement of rural residents.
