Presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Donald Duke, has said he would target a petrol price of about N300 per litre if elected president in the 2027 election.
Duke made the pledge on Wednesday while speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, where he discussed his economic plans and expectations for the 2027 presidential election.
Asked what he considered a realistic price for petrol under his administration, the former Cross River State governor said: “Try and bring it to about N300.”
Duke said affordable and readily available fuel was critical to the productivity of Nigerians and the wider economy, arguing that high energy costs put pressure on businesses, transportation and the movement of goods and services.
“I’ve said severally that the function of government is to ensure the productivity of their citizens within a safe and orderly environment. Fuel drives your economy. It should be available. It should be affordable,” he said.
The PRP candidate has previously argued that petrol prices could be reduced without returning to the traditional subsidy system. In September, he proposed that crude oil allocated for domestic refining should be priced based on its production cost rather than international market rates, while other crude by-products could be sold commercially to help offset the cost of petrol.
Duke maintained that government should create an economic environment where Nigerians can work, transport goods and services, and operate businesses without excessive pressure from energy costs.
His latest proposal comes as the cost of petrol continues to feature prominently in economic and political debates ahead of the 2027 election, with opposition figures offering different approaches to fuel pricing and subsidy policy.
