Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has urged residents to protect the peace and stability of the state as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections.

Yusuf made the call on Thursday during his address at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium in Kano to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The governor appealed to residents to embrace peace, unity and mutual respect, warning against actions that could trigger violence or threaten the state’s stability ahead of the elections.

“As the 2027 General Election is fast approaching, I also appeal to you all to continue to uphold peace, unity, and mutual respect. Let us shun violence and anything that may threaten the peace and stability of our dear state,” Yusuf said.

He also urged Kano residents and Nigerians to pray for a peaceful, free, fair and credible election. The governor praised security agencies for their efforts in protecting lives and property and called on citizens to reject violence, division, intolerance and criminality.

Yusuf said his administration would continue consolidating its programmes in education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, water supply, security and human capital development. He added that the state government would maintain cooperation with the Federal Government, local councils, traditional and religious institutions, the private sector and development partners.

On security, the governor said his administration was strengthening collaboration with security agencies and providing additional logistics and operational support to the military, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Department of State Services, particularly in vulnerable communities.

He said grassroots security coordination had also been expanded in areas including Tsanyawa, Ghari, Gwarzo, Shanono, Bagwai, Rogo, Kiru/Bebeji, Karaye and Tudun Wada/Doguwa. The aim, he said, was to protect residents, rebuild confidence and enable people to return to farming and other economic activities.

The governor also highlighted measures against drug abuse, illicit trafficking, thuggery and related crimes, including the establishment of the Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and an executive order aimed at strengthening enforcement.

Yusuf said the government was also supporting vulnerable families through start-up capital, livestock, skills training and other forms of assistance. He called on residents to use the independence anniversary to renew their commitment to peace, unity and responsible citizenship.
