Political tensions are mounting ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections after several candidates were reportedly omitted from the final lists published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Among those affected are Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidates Ladi Adebutu in Ogun State and former communications minister Isa Pantami in Gombe State.
The omissions have raised concerns among political parties, with some questioning the circumstances surrounding the publication of the lists and others considering legal action to protect their candidates’ positions.
The PDP said it was engaging INEC to resolve the issue, as the controversy threatens to complicate preparations for the forthcoming elections.
Other parties, including the Action Alliance (AA) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), have also raised concerns over candidates missing from the published lists.
However, the circumstances surrounding the reported omissions vary from one case to another. While some parties suspect technical errors, other disputes are linked to candidate nominations, party leadership disagreements and eligibility questions.
INEC had not publicly confirmed that a computer error was responsible for the omissions at the time of the report. The reasons behind the individual cases therefore remain subject to clarification.
The controversy has also raised questions about the process for correcting candidate lists and resolving disputes before the elections.
With some affected parties considering legal action, the matter could move beyond administrative engagement and into the courts if the disagreements remain unresolved.
The outcome of the disputes may determine whether the affected candidates appear on the ballot in 2027, making clarification from INEC and timely resolution of the complaints important to the electoral process.
