2027: Madumere Vows to Tackle Maternal, Infant Mortality in Imo East

Former Imo State Deputy Governor and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Imo East Senatorial District, Prince Eze Madumere, has promised to overhaul healthcare delivery and reduce maternal and infant deaths across Owerri Zone if elected senator in the 2027 general election.

Madumere made the pledge in Owerri as political parties and candidates begin fresh campaign activities following the lifting of the campaign restriction by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He described the loss of mothers and newborn babies to preventable causes as unacceptable, particularly in rural communities where access to quality healthcare remains a challenge. Madumere said his priority would be to make healthcare more affordable, accessible and effective for residents across the senatorial district.

“Every mother in our rural communities deserves qualitative, affordable and accessible healthcare delivery. No woman should face danger while delivering a baby. Every life matters and we are going to work assiduously to fix the health sector in Owerri Zone,” he said.

The PDP candidate identified shortages of primary healthcare centres, inadequate numbers of skilled birth attendants, limited emergency obstetric services and poor access to antenatal and postnatal care as key areas requiring urgent attention.

Madumere said his proposed healthcare programme would include upgrading and equipping primary healthcare centres, with emphasis on ensuring that every ward has a functional facility capable of providing essential services. He also promised regular training and improved support for nurses, rural health workers and other medical personnel.

The former deputy governor said his international exposure had given him knowledge of healthcare systems and practices that could be adapted to improve medical services in Imo East. He stressed that better healthcare was essential to the wider development of the zone.

“As someone with international exposure and experience, I am abreast with the healthcare needs of my people. I appreciate the fact that health is wealth and every development revolves around health,” he said.

Madumere said the healthcare proposals formed part of his Journey of Grace blueprint for Owerri Zone. He urged voters, community leaders and other stakeholders to support his vision, saying he was determined to build what he described as a “new Owerri Zone” if elected to the Senate in 2027.
