The Director of New Media and Strategic Communications of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Theo Abu Agada, has claimed that Peter Obi rejected an offer to become the running mate to African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 election.
Agada made the disclosure while responding to allegations that he was secretly working for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and leaking sensitive information about Obi’s campaign to the ruling party.
An X user, @Henryshield, had accused Agada of passing campaign information to alleged “paymasters” in the APC and questioned his role within the NDC.
Agada dismissed the allegation as baseless and challenged his accuser to provide evidence that he had shared any information about Obi’s campaign with the APC.
He also linked the accusations to disagreements surrounding the opposition camp, saying the critic was unhappy because Obi had declined what he described as a vice-presidential nomination from Atiku.
The claim comes against the backdrop of the political realignment among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Obi initially participated in the opposition coalition associated with the ADC before leaving the party in May 2026.
Obi subsequently emerged as the NDC’s presidential candidate, with former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso selected as his running mate. The Independent National Electoral Commission has listed Obi and Kwankwaso among the NDC’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2027 election.
Atiku, meanwhile, emerged as the ADC’s presidential candidate after Obi’s departure from the party. The development left the two prominent opposition figures pursuing separate presidential tickets ahead of the 2027 poll.
Agada’s latest remarks have therefore brought renewed attention to the political negotiations that preceded the emergence of separate NDC and ADC presidential tickets, although his account of the alleged vice-presidential offer remains a claim by an NDC official.
