2027: SDP’s Adewole Adebayo Promises Solar Power on Every Nigerian Roof Within 11 Months

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has promised to install between 11 and 15 kilowatts of solar power on every Nigerian roof within 11 months if elected president in 2027.

Adebayo made the pledge on Tuesday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, where he outlined his proposed approach to addressing Nigeria’s electricity challenges.

The SDP candidate said his administration would establish solar-panel manufacturing factories across the country while training Nigerians to install, operate and maintain solar power systems.

“I promise that between 11 to 15 kilowatts of solar power will be put on every roof within 11 months,” Adebayo said.

He said he had previously advised governments on power-related issues and had also experimented with solar technology in his hometown, where he claimed to have trained about 2,000 people.

According to Adebayo, he manufactures solar panels and lithium batteries but currently sources inverters from other manufacturers.

“I did an experiment in my hometown. I have about 2,000 people I trained on solar, because I manufacture the solar panels myself. I do lithium battery,” he said.

“The only thing I haven’t got the technological power to do is the inverter. So I buy the inverter. I do the solar battery.”

Adebayo proposed partnerships with countries including China, Turkey and India to establish solar-panel manufacturing facilities in Nigeria, with local workers trained to operate the factories.

He said the proposed solar clusters would provide electricity for basic household activities while creating employment opportunities and contributing to national power generation.

The SDP candidate also proposed using the national grid primarily as a backup system for the decentralised power clusters.

“Then you forget about it. I told them that the way we are going to manage the national grid. National grid is a backup. In case a cluster fails, you will power from there,” he said.

Adebayo further argued that government could make strategic investments in critical sectors such as aviation and manufacturing through operating and maintenance arrangements rather than leaving such industries entirely to private operators.

On energy security, he said his administration would prioritise domestic oil refining and tackle crude oil theft, which he identified as a major challenge to Nigeria’s energy supply and economic development.

He claimed that as much as 900,000 barrels of crude oil were still being stolen and argued that recovering the allegedly lost production would help increase domestic supply without requiring additional government expenditure.

Adebayo also maintained that public investment in sectors such as electricity and education could deliver multiple benefits by improving services while creating employment for Nigerians working in those sectors.

The SDP candidate’s proposals form part of his broader campaign agenda ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with electricity, job creation and economic development among the key issues expected to shape the contest.
