Vinicius Junior is reportedly seeking a salary package akin to the club-record wage Real Madrid paid Cristiano Ronaldo during his peak, amid increasingly tense negotiations over a new contract.
The Brazilian forward’s current deal with the Spanish giants runs until 2027.
Vinicius revealed in February that he and the club were engaged in open discussions about new terms, but recent reports from Spain suggest that talks have stalled.
Real Madrid are believed to be cautious about setting a precedent for other players by granting Vinicius a substantial salary, given the potential long-term implications.
The club’s concerns are likely informed by the experience of La Liga rivals Barcelona, where an escalating wage bill has had lasting consequences.
In initial negotiations earlier this year, Vinicius’s representatives purportedly requested a ‘historic contract,’ with an annual salary demand reportedly in the region of €30 million ($35 million). This figure surpasses any player in Real Madrid’s history, except Cristiano Ronaldo.
Notably, Vinicius is also seeking a ‘renewal bonus’ that even Ronaldo did not receive. Real Madrid’s annual salary cap is thought to be €20 million, which is purportedly the salary of top earner Kylian Mbappé and the valuation the club offered Vinicius before he requested more lucrative terms.
The club’s reluctance to meet Vinicius’s demands extends beyond historical precedent, as there are concerns regarding his recent performances, which have left him ‘out of favor’ at the Santiago Bernabéu.
New manager Xabi Alonso was reportedly set to drop Vinicius for the Club World Cup semifinal against Paris Saint-Germain this summer, until Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury ahead of the fixture altered plans.
Vinicius ultimately started on the right wing due to Mbappé’s absence on the left and Gonzalo García’s placement in the middle, leaving him disappointed.
