Customs, Defence Bureau Unveil Indigenous Airboat to Boost Anti-Smuggling Operations

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Defence Research and Development Bureau (DRDB) have successfully tested a locally built airboat designed to strengthen maritime security and combat smuggling in Nigeria’s waterways.

The test run, conducted at Jabi Lake in Abuja, showcased the vessel’s ability to navigate shallow and hard-to-reach areas, making it a strategic addition to the country’s security assets.

Comptroller Haniel Haddison, who oversees Special Duties at the NCS Headquarters, described the innovation as a milestone in indigenous technology and a testament to the Customs Service’s commitment to modernizing its anti-smuggling operations.

This is a welcome idea for the Nigeria Customs Service, and we commend the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for ensuring value is added through improved equipment. This collaboration reflects synergy and capacity building across security agencies,” Haddison said.

Rear Admiral Suleiman El-Ladan, Director of Maritime, Research and Development at the DRDB, also highlighted the significance of the partnership, stressing that inter-agency collaboration was crucial to countering evolving security threats in Nigeria’s maritime domain.

The testing exercise concluded with a symbolic exchange, as the Director General of the DRDB presented souvenirs to senior Customs officers in recognition of their commitment to national security and innovation.

The new airboat marks a push towards homegrown security solutions, aligning with Nigeria’s broader efforts to reduce reliance on foreign technology in addressing smuggling and maritime crimes.
