Ogun Inmates Rearrested After Daring Court Escape in Sagamu

There was a dramatic scene in Sagamu, Ogun State, after two inmates attempted to escape while being escorted from a court session back to custody.

The incident unfolded in the Isale-Oko area, where officers of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) were returning the prisoners to the facility. According to eyewitnesses, the duo fled the convoy, prompting a frantic chase by correctional officers.

One inmate was captured on the spot, while the second was rearrested later that day.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Command of the NCoS, Olayinka Owolola, said both escapees were tracked down without injuries or gunfire. He added that they will face fresh charges for attempting to flee custody.

“They attempted, but we captured the two of them without any shooting or injuries. We have the intention of retrying them in court for escape,” Owolola told reporters.

Prison breaks and attempted escapes are a recurring challenge for Nigeria’s correctional system. In August, 16 inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, after overpowering officers. That incident left five officials injured, further raising concerns about prison security nationwide.
