Relationships Are a ‘Financial Mistake’, Says Nigerian Singer Shallipopi

Nigerian artist Shallipopi has sparked controversy after warning young men to avoid relationships, which he described as a “financial trap.”

The fast-rising Afrobeats star argued that both relationships and marriage could ruin men financially, particularly those from humble backgrounds.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Shallipopi wrote:

“The biggest financial mistake, when you and your papa nor dey the Top 10 list of richest people in Africa, you go cry bro. OS na financial mistake, Girlfriend na financial mistake, stay celibate.”

The Edo-born musician urged men to live within their means and suggested celibacy as a safer alternative until they are financially secure.

His post has since triggered heated reactions online, with some agreeing with his perspective while others criticised him for discouraging love and companionship in the name of financial caution.
